Helicobacter pylori weaken the protective lining of the stomach and intestine; this allows the acid to get through the sensitive lining beneath. Both the bacteria and acid irritate the mucosal lining leading to ulcers. Symptoms include burning sensation in the stomach, frequent burping, bloating, and abdominal pain.
